The Department of Agriculture (DA) is currently in the process of negotiations with the state-owned Food Terminal Inc. (FTI) to secure a new batch of fresh onions that will be sold at a discounted price in Kadiwa stores. As of January 13th, Kadiwa stores have temporarily halted the sales of red and white onions at P170 per kilo, which is significantly lower than the P600 to P700 per kilo price found at various markets in Metro Manila. The DA is currently waiting for the liquidation and inventory report on the previous cycle of onions sold at Kadiwa stores before proceeding with the negotiations.
The DA is still in the process of determining the allocation for the second cycle of discounted onion sales at Kadiwa stores. DA’s representative, Evangelista stated that they are still waiting for reports from the Food Terminal Inc. (FTI) before finalizing the allocation. She also added that the proceeds from the first cycle of sales will be used to purchase new onions for the next cycle. The DA’s main goal remains to sell onions at a cheaper price for the benefit of the consumers.
