Pres. Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has appointed Eduardo Punay as the officer-in-charge of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), according to an announcement made by Malacañang on Tuesday. Punay, a former journalist and current Undersecretary for Special Projects at the agency, has confirmed his new role. The DSWD was previously headed by Secretary Erwin Tulfo, who is also a former news personality.
The DSWD released a statement welcoming the appointment of Eduardo Punay as the agency’s officer-in-charge, highlighting the importance of the appointment for the continuity of the DSWD’s programs as the agency responds to the impact of the shear line and amihan in various parts of the country. The statement emphasized the need for the appointment to ensure the smooth operation of the agency and prevent any disruptions to its activities.
Erwin Tulfo’s confirmation as the head of the DSWD was delayed by the Commission on Appointments in November due to concerns about his US citizenship and past libel convictions. Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri stated that Tulfo was unable to provide documents demonstrating that he had renounced his US citizenship. Tulfo requested an executive session to address the issues raised by lawmakers, which was granted.
